The Story of Jonathan Veitch

Jonathan Veitch was appointed the 15th president of Occidental College in July 1st, 2009. The previous dean of The New School’s Eugene Lang College based in New York City, Veitch is also a leading supporter for the education of liberal arts.

When at Occidental, Veitch managed to establish a new incorporated strategic planning procedure to improve the future of the college, add strength to the civic engagement, arts as well as international literacy plans of Occidental College, and wanted to come up with new joint ventures with leading cultural organizations in Southern California. Under his management, Occidental finished the building of a new Samuelson Alumni Center as well as the repair and development of 98-year-old Swan Hall that accommodates at least a 1/3 of Oxy’s faculty. Interior repairs to the remarkable Johnson Hall are underway so as to accommodate the new McKinnon Family Center for Politics and Global Affairs, and the junior level of Johnson Student Center is under repair credits to a funding from Rose Hills Foundation. A one-megawatt solar array that has been mounted on the ground- among the biggest of its type in Los Angeles- has been set up in the campus, and is bound to generate about 11 % of the annual electricity consumption of the college.

A Los Angeles local as well as graduate of Stanford University, he obtained his PhD in History of American Civilization from Harvard University. Veitch lectured in the department of English at the University of Wisconsin, Madison prior to joining The New School. As an assistant university lecturer of literature plus history, Veitch’s service involved stints as Chairman of humanities as well as associate provost prior to his five-year tenure as dean where he concentrated in increasing Lang’s size as well as capacity so as to gain from its position as a metropolitan liberal arts campus.

The writer of an award-winning American Super-realism: Nathanael West and the Politics of Representation in the 1930s (University of Wisconsin Press, 1997), Veitch’s specialties of education specialization comprises of 19th- and 20th-century American literature plus cultural history, as well as American movie. His latest study has concentrated on the account of advanced education in USA. Jonathan, his spouse Sarah plus their 3 children reside in the President’s residence called the Wallis Annenberg inside Occidental Campus.

Veitch will be remembered a lot due to his great effort in improving relations between Occidental College and the surrounding society, limiting development of the institution towards the society in reaction to area concerns.
