Ryan new head coach of Bills

The Buffalo Bills have just announced their new head coach and he is a figure who is familiar to Bills fans though they are used to rooting against him. Rex Ryan the former head coach of the division rival New York Jets was named the new coach of the Buffalo Bills.

Ryan replaces former Bills coach Doug Marrone who exercised an opt out clause in his contract which allowed him to step away from the Bills if there was a change in ownership at Buffalo which occurred when Ralph Wilson passed away. As a result of the opt out clause Marrone received an $4 million payment to not coach the team in 2014. There were reports that Marrone disagreed with the Bills General Manager on a trade of the 2014 and 2015 first round picks of the Bills in order to snag receiver Sammy Watkins.

Rex Ryan now steps into a team that is saddled with the same problems as his Jet team. A strong defense but no starting quarterback. Ryan is thought of as a defensive guru but has not been able to develop former Jets quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and current quarterback Geno Smith. The Bills have EJ Manual as the quarterback of the team who is largely considered a disappointment during his tenure.

The Bills were not thought of as a desirable head coaching position due to the lack of quarterback and as its place as a small city without significant media interest. I know Bills fans, like Fersen Lambranho, will be watching Ryan very closely.
